HERE IS A SNAP SHOT OF THE HISTORY OF TOTNES...............

Built originally around High Street and Fore Street, Totnes stretches from Bridgetown and the River Dart up the steep hill to the Norman Castle. The town's Saxon footprint can still be picked out amongst the attractive jumble of small side streets and houses.

Affluent in Elizabethan times, this lively town retains a wealth of listed buildings, an array of small shops and eating places, and a long tradition of independence of spirit. Renowned as a centre for artists and those committed to progressive or alternative life styles, Totnes has been named as one of the ten funkiest places in the world by a British Airways review.

Totnes Town Council enjoys an equally proud heritage, with an unbroken line of Mayors dating back to 1377. They are listed in the Tudor Guildhall, where the Council still meets. In May 2006, the town celebrated the 800th anniversary of its Royal Charter, given by King John in 1206.
