Totnes Vire Twin Town Association

The first formal link the town had with Vire was in September 1972 when a party from Totnes, including the Mayor, went to Vire to sign the charter. This was a pledge between the two towns that they would encourage social and cultural visits. Since then the two towns have visited each other on alternate years. The Twinning Association was formed to relieve the town council from the task of organising the visits.

In 2002 for the 30th anniversary of the twinning Cllr Marion Adams, the then Mayor, went over to Vire with a party from the town to attend a re signing ceremony. She presented a ceramic plate to the Town of Vire to commemorate the event.

Visits are still continuing but the numbers are dwindling. Efforts are being made on both sides of the channel to bring in younger members. The Association members are looking forward to the 40th anniversary next year when Totnes returns to France and it is hoped that there will be a weekend of celebrations.

Anyone wishing to join can obtain a membership form from the General Secretary Mike Boyle, 01803 867133 or the Membership Secretary Pam Ratcliff 01803 812922.
