Accessibility Advisory for Eastgate Pavement

Over the summer the Council has been made aware of a number of unfortunate accidents where people in mobility scooters and wheelchairs have fallen off the kerb into the road below Eastgate where the pavement suddenly narrows on the right-hand side as you go uphill. The Town Council has considered options and also consulted with Devon Highways but there is no simple solution to the problem. To try and reduce the number of incidents and risk of injury, the Town Council has placed a friendly warning on the bollards (and there will also be signage put on the side of the nearby planter) advising of the unsuitability for wheelchair and mobility scooter use beyond this point. We hope that this will be useful for users, particularly visitors to the town, to get off the pavement via the dropped kerb before potentially getting stuck in the narrow section or coming to any harm.
