Totnes Town Council has a vacancy for a part time Caretaker & Maintenance Assistant. Hours are 25 hours per week over 7 days. Hours of work will be variable and dependent on Civic Hall and Guildhall bookings identified through a weekly rota but will include frequent evening and weekend work. Double time will be paid for any hours worked between 11pm-7am and on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

We are seeking an efficient and well-motivated individual to join the Town Council team. You will need to be confident working independently, have excellent timekeeping and be willing to work flexibly in terms of duties and hours.

The role will involving assisting our Town Maintenance Officer with a wide variety of manual tasks that may include working outside, moving heavy weights, grounds maintenance duties, emptying bins, driving the Council vehicle, and carrying out general DIY tasks. In addition you will be required to act as Caretaker for our Civic Hall and Guildhall opening and closing for hirers out of office hours in the evenings and on weekends as bookings dictate. The Civic Hall is a busy community venue available for hire 7 days a week. The historic Guildhall is also available for hire on weekends and is licenced for weddings.

You will need to have a flexible approach to your working hours and be prepared to attend for occasional early morning or late night bookings as well as any emergency call-outs. You will also need general DIY experience and be physically able to undertake heavy outdoor work which will include gardening duties. You must have a friendly and helpful manner for dealing with hirers and the members of the public. Problem solving skills and excellent timekeeping will be essential. The role will involve working independently as well as part of the maintenance team and therefore the successful candidate will be trustworthy and conscientious.

We are looking for a friendly, organised person to join our small team based in a town centre location. Hours are 32.5 hours per week over 5 days, Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 4.30pm (with ½ hr lunch) but some flexibility over start and finish times may be required. Additional hours may be necessary including some evenings and weekends, as required by the activities of the Town Council. The job will be based in a town centre location.

The role involves providing an efficient PA service to the Mayor, the organisation of some Council events including more formal civic occasions and community events / workshops, taking responsibility for office administration to ensure the smooth running of the office, and providing support to the Marketing & Communications Manager. The role will also include acting as cover for our Assistant in the Tourist Information Office in the event of absence due to sickness or leave.

You will need to have experience in minute taking, have a good working knowledge of IT hardware and software systems, and be experienced in using social media. Adaptability and excellent organisational and time management skills are essential for working in our busy office. The postholder will be required to undertake training to act as a First Aider for the Council and will be required to cover the reception and phones in the event of staff absences.

Relevant experience or transferable skills are required.
