Proclamation of HM King Charles III

On Monday 12 September 2022, the Mayor of Totnes carried out the traditional local proclamation of the accession to the throne by King Charles III. The event took place at the Brutus Stone, Fore Street and gatherers then processed through the town to St Mary’s Church. Here a minute’s silence was held followed by some words of reflection on the long reign of HM the Queen.

Cllr Emily Price, Mayor of Totnes, commented: “The proclamation confirming a new monarch is a once in a generation tradition. Whilst we no longer rely on this event for the important news to be shared, it does provide a time for the community to come together to reflect.  A crowd gathered beside the Brutus Stone for the proclamation and as Mayor of Totnes, representing Totnes Town Council and the people of our town, I was proud to deliver the reading for those residents who are grieving deeply and for whom these traditions carry deep meaning.”
