Totnes Christmas Lights Switch-On: A Wonderful Start to the Festive Season
The Totnes Christmas Lights Switch-On is a truly special moment for our community. While the Totnes Christmas Market and Late Night Shopping bring visitors from far and wide to enjoy our unique shops, performers and festive atmosphere, the Lights Switch-On remains a more intimate celebration – one created by and for the people who live here.
For Totnes Town Council, the event is one of our highlights of the year. It offers an opportunity to champion our local schoolchildren, provide free entertainment for families, and create a welcoming, inclusive start to the festive season.
From offering complimentary juice and biscuits to subsidising local traders such as Pizza Pirates -which allowed for lower pricing so more families could enjoy a warm slice – we aim to ensure the evening feels rooted in generosity and community spirit.
This year, we were delighted to see so many residents joining us once again. Elfic the Jester and Bubbles the Pixie brought laughter and magic to the Market Square throughout the afternoon.
Children enjoyed creative crafting activities and plenty of fun on the snow globe, while Father Christmas and our festive stilt walkers added extra sparkle to the celebrations. And yes – the queue for Pizza Pirates was long, but definitely worth the wait!
Of course, the evening wouldn’t be the same without the people of Totnes. Thank you to everyone who came out in the clear – if chilly – weather to share in this wonderful community moment. Your support makes the Totnes Christmas Lights Switch-On the magical event it is.
Our heartfelt thanks also goes out to the talented pupils of The Grove School and St John’s School, who performed beautifully at the beginning of the evening. They looked and sounded wonderful, and helped set the tone for a joyful evening.
Once the countdown finished and the Square glowed with its new festive lights, Totnes Brass Band rounded off the event superbly.
