TAODS Celebrates 90 Years with Sell‑Out ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ Pantomime at Totnes Civic Hall

Totnes Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (TAODS) marked its 90th anniversary with a hugely successful run of Little Red Riding Hood at the Totnes Civic Hall, attracting more than 1,100 audience members and raising funds for local charity Totnes Caring.

A Milestone Year for Community Theatre in Totnes

TAODS, founded in 1936, has been a cornerstone of Totnes’ cultural life for nine decades. From its early days performing The Pirates of Penzance at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel to its first pantomime in 1953, the society has maintained a long tradition of community theatre in the town.

This year’s pantomime continued that legacy, drawing large audiences and selling out three of its five performances.

A Fresh Take on a Much‑Loved Fairy Tale

Written and directed by TAODS committee member Gina Tredwell, Little Red Riding Hood brought together a multi‑generational local cast. The production offered a humorous and family‑friendly retelling of the classic story, supported by handmade costumes, sets and props created by volunteers, committee members, and parents.

More than £300 was raised for Totnes Caring, supporting essential services for older and vulnerable residents.

Strong Praise from Audiences and Performers

Audience feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One attendee described the show as:

“By far the best production I’ve ever seen at the Civic Hall. Great version, excellent acting, very funny, amazing sets.”

Performers also shared their enthusiasm, including first‑time cast members who spoke of a welcoming community and a memorable creative experience.

TAODS Chair Reflects on 90 Years of Local Talent

TAODS Chair Simon Harris highlighted the pantomime’s longstanding role in the town’s cultural calendar:

“The annual Totnes Pantomime is a highlight of our community calendar and a tradition we’re incredibly proud to keep alive.”

He also noted the multi‑generational connections within the society, with several cast and backstage members returning year after year, often following in the footsteps of family members before them.

A Vibrant Future for Community Arts in Totnes

As TAODS celebrates its 90th year, the society continues to provide opportunities for performers of all ages and experience levels, and to offer affordable, accessible theatre for families across South Devon.
